They are either kidnapped (as they remember at the start, until the flashback light overwrites that part) or they could actually have done the application. Either way is possible, since none are proven or disproved. They're not 'scripted' but just manipulated. They could just as well be real personalities who just forgot about their previous lives. Same for their personalities being fake.
